Patek Philippe on His Wrist
- July 31st, 2009When I first heard my ex-boyfriend mention Patek Philippe to me, I was too young to really get it. What did I know about Swiss watches? Why would I care? I was in my 20’s, for chrissake, when wearing plastic earrings is made to look hip and trendy, because you can’t afford anything else. ‘We’ll make big bucks’ – he used to say – ‘And I’ll get myself a Patek Philippe Sceleton Chronograph’. A what?
At the time I had no idea what a Patek Philippe might actually cost, but if I knew back then what their list price was, I’d have figured out my boyfriend wouldn’t be able to afford a replica watch in a million years, let alone an original. But that’s a different story.
I distinctly remember he asked me what my favorite watch brand was. Was it Swiss movement, Japanese movement? Did I like them sleek and modern or retro and covered in diamonds? I could have lied, I could have named the only brand that came to mind – Cartier – and saved myself the embarrassment of blowing my cover, but I was too honest. ‘You’ve never heard of Patek Philippe?!’ – he blinked several times in total disbelief. He made me log onto several websites and check out the collections. He showed me his favorites – the limited edition Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillion, the Calatrava and of course, the Sceleton Chronograph.
‘See the lines? How perfect they are?’ – he gasped in awe, as the photographs of Les Historiques loaded on the screen. He told me how important it was for a man to have a decent watch on his wrist, and by the looks of it, if he ever got his hands on a Patek Philippe, he’d marry it!
Later in life, when I took off my plastic jewellery and started attending corporate meetings, my outlook on what singled one out in a crowd, changed. Of course you had to be professional, certainly you had to be well-mannered, but there was always something else. With women it was jewellery and hair. As a woman I quickly learned the difference between cubic zirkonia and diamonds, as well as a self-styled do vs. a professional blow-dry. With men it was all different. Not all had hair, not all had great body shapes to show off their suits, yet whenever one flashed a Swiss watch into your face, you just knew the game was on!
Mind you, some of the watches that were flashed at meetings, were genuine. However knowing their list price, I was secretely trying to guess which one of those meeting attendees were wearing Swiss replicas. Guessing was my only option because my friends, when you look at a really good quality Patek Philippe replica, you just can’t tell the difference. They look like an original, weigh the same as the original, are hand crafted just like a very real Patek Philippe and hypnotize you just as bad. I won’t say Patek Philippe secured some of those guys a contract signing, but I won’t lie if I say that contracts don’t sign themselves, and the better impression you make, the more chances you have in the business world – as simple as that.
